One of the essential documents you need to declare ownership of a vehicle is the title certificate. Without this document, you cannot prove you own your vehicle. This can spell a lot of problems especially if you get pulled by a police officer. What happens if you lose the title of your car? Apollo Auto invites you to keep reading as we talk about the way you can obtain a new title for your car if you lost it or got damaged.
Your car title is one of the most if not the most important document you can have as a car owner. This document contains relevant information regarding ownership of the vehicle. Some of the information provided within a car title include the owner’s name, address, contact information, and other relevant data. There are also different types of titles you may have depending on your vehicle’s history. For instance, you may have what is known as a clean title. A clean title states that your car was never involved in a severe accident or it was never totaled during a crash.
Another type of title is known as a clear title. This title lets you or any potential buyer there are no existing liens or levies against your car. This will reassure anyone interested in your car, and let them know there are no third parties trying to claim ownership of your vehicle.
Another common type of title is known as a salvage title. A salvage title is a document that let a potential buyer know your vehicle was involved in an accident and was declared a total loss. Commonly, after a car is declared a total loss, your insurance company sells it to a company who will fix it and sell it to a third party. Since your vehicle was declared a total loss and later fixed and re-sold, the title can no longer be a clean title but a salvage one.
You may wonder what happens if you lose your car’s title. Fortunately, the state of New Jersey has a straightforward mechanism in place through which you can recover your lost car title. However, you need to follow specific steps to obtain a duplicate of your original title successfully.
As soon as you have noticed you have lost your car’s title, you should apply for a title replacement with your local Department of Motor Vehicle office (DMV). In New Jersey, you are required to complete and file Form OS/SS-52. You must provide accurate information to obtain your title duplicate. Once you have provided the necessary documentation, you should pay a $60 fee to receive your title duplicate. While the complete process can be done by visiting your local DMV office, you also have the option to send all the documentation via mail.
If your car title was damaged, you will need to follow a series of steps similar to those taken to replace a lost title. Keep in mind your title must provide accurate and precise information about your ownership. Therefore, if your car title is damaged at any point, you will need to request a replacement. You will need to provide your local DMV with a statement explaining the reason that justifies replacing your car’s title certificate. Additionally, you will need to provide additional information such as your name, address, and contact information. Furthermore, you have to also provide the DMV with all relevant information related to your vehicle such as model, make, year, and VIN.
Once you have all the required information, you can file it with your local DMV office along with your damaged title and a $60 replacement fee. Keep in mind you can also mail the information, your damaged title, and payment to the DMV via mail at:
